Community Learning: Introduction to Painting and Drawing

Course overview

In this course, you will look at art and respond to the world around you through a series of fun practical exercises.

Our Community Learning programme offers a series of free, government funded courses to develop your skills, knowledge, confidence and improve your mental wellbeing. This programme is separate from our main adult learning courses and is for adults aged 19 or over (at the start of the course).

We would like to welcome you on all or any of the following Saturday dates:


1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd of October, the 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th of November or the 3rd, 10th of December


14th, 21st, 28th of January, the 4th, 11th, 25th of February or the 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th of March 2023

Using simple and structured activities, we will introduce key concepts such as line, tone, composition and mark making.

You will explore colour, painting techniques and the expressive qualities of mediums.

This course is ideal if you have little or no drawing and painting experience; it’s a great way to learn from the beginning and also push yourself to grow creativity!

You will learn through a variety of methods, including:

  • tutor demos
  • peer support
  • individual learning
  • experimental making

Basic materials will be provided. Bring an open mind and an enthusiasm to make!
