BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching, Fitness and Rehabilitation (blended learning)

Course overview

Working in Partnership with the Universal Centre of Sport (UCS), Activate Learning has developed a BSc (Hons) in Sports Coaching, Fitness and Rehabilitation (top-up) which is awarded by Oxford Brookes University.

This is delivered by UCS through a blended-learning model (80% online and 20% practical face-to-face) with three, one-week residentials (3–7 October 2022, 25–29 January 2023 and 24–31 March 2023) at Northampton Town Football Club. There, you will undertake practical assessments and delivery.

This unique programme combines synchronous (real-time) online learning with residential blocks in a blended-learning delivery model that has been designed specifically to meet the needs of existing HND or Foundation Degree Sport and Exercise Science students who are keen to gain a BSc (Hons) degree whilst continuing to work within professional and semi-professional environments that they are already associated with.

In some cases, the students are employed by the professional clubs (contracted) and therefore wish to safeguard their futures by furthering their education in this way, whilst others are keen to progress their learning to allow them to work in a more professional capacity in areas such as coaching or rehabilitation.

Tuition Fees

Home/EU* Fee for September 2022 entry: £7,570 per year

Inclusive Costs

Residential accommodation in Northampton during face-to-face block teaching weeks will be paid for by UCS.

Kit is an additional cost to learner £100–£160 depending on which package you choose.

Food and drink additional cost to learners during residential blocks.

Travel cost to and from Northampton Town Football Club three times per year. For example, Dorking to Northampton by rail travel. Purchasing a five-day open return travel card is approximately £88 return.

You will study four modules over one academic year:

  • Advanced rehabilitation techniques and processes. Face to face and online delivery.
  • Integrated approaches to training and assessment. Face to face and online delivery.
  • Advanced coaching practice. Face to face and online delivery
  • Dissertation. Online delivery.

The academic year is divided into two semesters, each semester is 15 weeks.

Delivery is via a blended-learning method (80% online synchronous delivery and 20% practical face-to-face delivery) which is increasingly being recognised as a more successful model than singular approaches in terms of student satisfaction and improved grades. Adopting this mode avoids the need for students to relocate, enabling them to fulfil their commitments to their football or rugby league club whilst providing unique opportunities for students to come together periodically (three, one-week residential blocks at Northampton Town Football Club) to complete practical activities and assessments.

Throughout the programme, teaching and learning strategies adopted by tutors will acknowledge a range of learning styles. Students are encouraged to critically analyse concepts, theories, and practice and how this is demonstrated in the applied field of sports.

The modules will encourage students to demonstrate a thorough grasp of knowledge which is essential in order to practice safely and ensure competence. Students will also have the opportunity to develop their own research through a dissertation.

Learning is supported through close contact with a range of sport and fitness specialists, with access to dedicated facilities. It provides an opportunity for personally focused learning.

Concentrating on the three key disciplines of sports coaching, fitness and rehabilitation, the programme will enable students to develop and sustain a career in the field or go onto specialise in postgraduate study. As a student of both Activate Learning and Oxford Brookes University, students will have access to both facilities and resources to support their studies.

The module assessments have been designed to assist in the building of skills offering formative before summative assignments. There will be a schedule for each student that provides the opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge and skills.

Students must have completed an appropriate programme to be eligible to apply for the entry to the BSc (Hons) in Sports Coaching, Fitness and Rehabilitation (Blended learning) top-up. These include:

  • A Higher National Diploma in Sports and Exercise Science and related disciplines, successfully gaining 240 credits with Merit Profile at level 5.
  • A Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching, Fitness and Rehabilitation awarded by Oxford Brookes University, successfully gaining 240 credits and usually a 55% grade average
  • A Foundation degree in Sports, Science, or related disciplines, successfully gaining 240 credits and usually a 55% grade average, subject to individual credit rating by Oxford Brookes University.
  • Applicants whose first language is not English, must also demonstrate that their level of English is acceptable by achieving a score in a recognised test, such as:
  • British Council IELTS: normally minimum level 6.0 overall with a minimum of 6.0 in the reading and writing components.
  • TOEFL minimum score of 550 paper-based or 213 computers based or 80 internet-based.

Following completion of the BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching, Fitness and Rehabilitation, graduates will be able to progress to postgraduate study and/or gain employment as:

  1. Sports Professional / Coach / Analyst
  2. Sports Injury Practitioner
  3. Sports Massage Therapist
  4. Fitness Instructor / Scientist
  5. Personal Trainer
  6. Strength and Conditioning Science
  7. Sport Rehabilitation Scientist

Student Support Arrangements

BSc Sports Coaching, Fitness and Rehabilitation students have access to a range of Student Support services to support their studies. These include additional dyslexia support given in academic tutorial support with self-management, academic writing and study skills which is provided by a team of HE Study Support tutors. This is an inclusive service which any student can access, regardless of whether they have a specific learning difficulty or not.

Students will also have access to Activate Learning’s counselling, safeguarding, wellbeing and careers guidance services, as well as IT support. Additional guidance and contact details of all the services provided for students are published in Activate Learning’s HE Student Handbook.

Activate Learning also provides the following funds to support higher education students:

  1. Study support fund: to help support students in meeting additional costs associated with their studies.
  2. Hardship fund: to help support students experiencing financial difficulty.
  3. Student-led Enhancement Projects (StEPs) fund: to help support student enterprise.

Students will be provided with a Performance Mentor as previously mentioned. Their role is broadly equivalent to a personal tutor with associated employability / career development interests. They will maintain regular contact throughout the year with one-on-one opportunities available around, during breaks and after the weekly online and block face-to-face sessions. This mentorship guidance includes the provision of welfare and pastoral support as necessary and to guide students to information on appropriate College, University or External Agency support services (such as TASS, the International Student Sport association (FISU) or the Professional Footballers Association (PFA) for players specifically within that sporting domain).

As this is an Associate College Partnership programme students will have an opportunity to attend an induction to Oxford Brookes University in order to understand the facilities and support available and for them to feel part of the University.
